Concrete Psalms

Figures set against stairwells and concrete walls, waiting for the hour when a shadow draws the frame for me.

A short editorial for Atelier Review about the post-war housing blocks of Marseille, told through the people who walk past them every day.

A woman in round sunglasses and a brown jacket sits on a concrete ledge, a sharp diagonal of sunlight on the wall behind her.

Frame 16 · 50mm · f/11 · 1/250 s · ISO 100

Noon line.

Black and white, seen from above: a woman leans back on a marble stair rail, one hand in her hair.

Frame 17 · 35mm · f/2.8 · 1/125 s · ISO 400

Stairwell, from the fourth floor.

The story

Concrete is a patient background. It holds light like paper, and at noon in Marseille the sun cuts it into hard diagonals that move about a centimetre a minute.

I scouted the walls a week before and timed each frame to the shadow, not the other way round. The stairwell picture was made from the fourth floor looking straight down, on the only afternoon the caretaker left the door open.

Golden Hour

A knitwear campaign made in the twenty minutes before the sun touches the ground, chased across one long summer.

A young woman in a striped wool sweater leans on a car in golden evening light, her hair lifted by the wind.
