An autumn campaign for Maison Ilse, shot against painted backdrops in a borrowed theatre and on the streets around it.

A man in a long dark coat walks across a glowing orange and red backdrop, his body trailing a motion blur.

Frame 05 · 45mm · f/5.6 · 1/2 s · ISO 100

Orange hour, half a second.

A young woman with long blonde hair and freckles looks straight into the lens while the street around her smears into streaks.

Frame 06 · 85mm · f/2.8 · 1/15 s · ISO 200

Stripes, mid-crowd.

A woman with a dark bob in profile against a pale wall, an orange streak of light cutting through her silhouette.

Frame 07 · 85mm · f/4 · 1/4 s · ISO 100

Profile, with a light leak on the roll.

A woman with closed eyes tilts her face up to a blue sky, blurred red and violet shapes moving behind her.

Frame 08 · 63mm · f/4 · 1/4 s · ISO 160

Exhale.

The story

Maison Ilse wanted the collection to feel like it was already moving before anyone put it on. So we never froze it. Every frame is a long exposure with a short burst of flash, which pins the face and lets the coat, the hair and the street keep going.

The orange backdrop was painted by hand the night before and was still drying when we started. The light streak in the profile frame is not a filter. It is a torch, swung once across the lens during a quarter-second exposure, on the fourth attempt.
